2020 OPENING NIGHT FILM
SOUTH BAY DRIVE-IN EXPERIENCE
Gates open 7pm, screening at 7:30pm
On Thursday, November 12th the festival heads to the South Bay Drive-in for the official 2020 Opening Night feature, Searchlight Pictures, NOMADLAND. Winner of the Golden Lion Award at this year’s Venice Film Festival, it continues to draw critical acclaim. The film overflows with humanity, complexity, and solitude set amidst the landscape and beauty of the American West. Based on Jessica Bruder’s non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the 21st Century, the film follows Fern (Frances McDormand), an invented character, on her nomadic journey in 2008 following the economic crash. McDormand, who produced the film, delivers a raw, stubborn, and tender performance that will no doubt land her on many awards shortlists this year. Brilliantly directed and written by Chloe Zhao, who paces the film in a subtle, unflinching manner to reveal a side of America that many are not aware exists.
